Update from Guatemala Flood in Coban
Cathy Grant, daughter of Cliff and Sunny Grant, CMM missionaries in Coban, Guatemala, reports that rescue efforts are over and now the work of clean up, repairs, and rebuilding begins. The Grants express their gratitude for the emergency funds that have come in so far. They have bought food and clothing for some of 300 families who were forced from their homes damaged in the sudden deluge that began Sunday, August 12th and stopped on Tuesday, August, 14th. Nine people lost their lives in Coban. Many said the damage and disaster was much worse than in Hurricane Mitch.
If you are interested in joining a disaster relief team to Coban, call 704-225-3927 or email at officecmm@gmail.com
Funds are needed for food, clothing, and to repair the damaged and destroyed homes near Nueva Esperanza, where CMM has planted a church. During Hurricane Mitch, Clifford and his pastors and friends were used by God to reach unaided people and a new church was planted in a rural area near Coban.
We believe God will use the Grants in this great time of need to reach many with the love of God and we expect many lives to draw closer to the Lord. To view recent photos, go to http://picasaweb.google.com/OfficeCMM/Guatemala

Almost ten years ago when my wife and I owned rental real estate in Roanoke, Virginia we were extremely blessed and we experienced wonderful growth in the Lord in our whole family and also experienced heavy spiritual warfare. Growth in our Christian walk is costly but it is worth the struggle every time. Any teaching that says if you live right, you will not face trials or resistance or warfare, is not speaking about "normal Christianity".
One of my first houses was a fire damaged home in the inner city. During the six months of repair three times arsonists tried to burn the house down. The Fire Marshall marveled each time that the fire was somehow snuffed out without doing much damage. We had prayed God’s protection over all our properties. One arsonist was caught and sent to prison.
Once the house was repaired I had tenants move in. In one apartment lived two parents and their son, about 8 years old. I had suspected they were involved in drug use as they often had a hard time paying their rent which I let them pay once a week. In an effort to witness to them the love of God for them I had given the son a children’s Bible.
One night Bobby D. called me with a request for an electrical repair. The next morning on the way to the house I saw Bobby with his son at the bus stop. I waved. He waved. I drove on over to the house, which was about 150 feet from them, behind the house they were standing by. I knocked on the door several times with no answer. I was always cautious, not knowing if the wife might be inside. After three loud calls into the house, seeing the door was unlocked and partially opened, I went in the 20 feet to the hall where the electric box was located and began to make a small repair.
Within only about three minutes Bobby came storming in yelling “no one comes in my house when I am not here!” I mentioned that I was almost done and I had knocked and the door was partially open. He yelled and got angrier by the second. He had me cornered as he came at me swinging a tire iron. He was a big guy weighing almost 300 pounds.
Almost instinctively I held open my empty hands from my waist and said “Father, forgive him, he knows not what he does!” Suddenly, this assuredness from eternity flooded me. Paul’s words in Phil 1:28 came alive right then. “You are in no way alarmed by your opponents—which is sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God.”
Wow! I was protected by some strange “bubble” of God’s love in action. It was real, unseen, and it saved my life. As Bobby realized he could not harm me, he was swinging the tire iron more violently, cussing, swearing, yelling at me. God’s peace, which overcomes the enemy and which is beyond human understanding, came over me and I just stood there, shielded and safe, almost helpless, but safe.
When he stopped swinging I convinced him to let me finish the repair. I left quickly, praying throughout the day for wisdom for me, whether I should prosecute or not, and for mercy for Bobby and his family.
The next morning I rode by early, still wondering whether to charge him with this violent attack, when I noticed as I approached the house that the curtains were gone. I soon realized that they had moved out overnight, taking everything with them, except for one thing. In the middle of the floor was the Bible I had given the son. My heart broke for the family and that young boy. I never saw them again. The wife did call me about a year later for a chance to rent from me again.
How I was touched by God and His love, protection, mercy, which protects us all. While in that dire situation I experienced the reality of His love. In that instant, I knew, if Bobby would have killed me, I would be in that place where that small amount of human faith leads... to eternity with Jesus.
The fear was gone. In fact, in that instant, it did not have time to show up.
As we plant seeds of life into our spirit and our character is molded into the stature of fullness that is Christ, and we allow the Word to live in us, when we need it, it can save us. I know now a little more of this amazing grace we have freely offered to us.
May all the Word you have read and meditated on,
may all the prayers you have prayed,
may all the faith encounters you have had,
may all those testimonies of God’s inheritance in His word,
that He gives you for your inheritance,
may they all come alive in you in the days ahead.
God needs you to bring His will to pass.
As we read in Hebrews 11:38
of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.
11:39
And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise,
11:40
God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.
We have a purpose. We have a calling. A unique destiny was made for each one of us. Go forth! Walk out the completed work of the cross, rejoicing. Generational teamwork is such a powerful legacy which you inherit. Accept it. Live it and be willing to die for it.
